An English comedy rolls the routine where someone tells a larger-than-life story, and the other contestants have to judge whether or not it is a lie. In one episode, comedian Chris McCausland told a true story on himself about the trials of his blindness. A man was moving into his unit block, to whom Chris said hello, but the man made no reply. At first, he thought the man was rude, until he found out that the man was deaf!
There’s a larger (yet true) story in the Book, in the ninth chapter of John. A blind man was telling how he was suddenly able to see, when he ran into some men who snubbed him. Not because they were deaf, nor blind, but because they didn’t like the story of his healing. For it was a Sabbath when the miracle happened, and the one who had done the miracle was Jesus. They concluded that he must be lying.
There comes a point on the show where the reveal is made, as to whether the story is the truth or a lie, and then everyone has a good laugh. But in the story of the man born blind, he told the truth, but they shook their heads. Even his parents were brought in to testify, but still they snarled. And in the end, they bawled him out and threw him off the show. The saying is true: ‘There’s none so blind as those who will not see.’
