The bargain

DM 5th July 2025

There’s a smile that never fails to amuse me. It regularly appears on Antiques Roadshow every time someone, who submits a treasured heirloom from their great aunt’s estate for appraisal, is told by the expert the estimated price. And then it appears. Words are said, “Gosh! I didn’t think it was nearly worth that much! Wow! That’s absolutely smashing! You’ve made my day”; while the thoughts are going, “You’re joking! It must be worth a fortune. And you’re offering me what? Unbelievable! How disappointing. You’ve ruined my chance for a holiday!”

Old King Solomon recognized the facial-feign in one of his clever portraits in the book of Proverbs, except with this twist. Instead of the seller feigning joy, the buyer feigns doubt and disappointment, in the hope that the seller will lower their price. ‘“It’s no good, it’s no good!” says the buyer – then goes off and boasts about the purchase.’

How different the picture St Jude paints at the end of his letter, when he describes the smile of Jesus over those who will stand with him in heaven. “To him who is able to keep you from stumbling and to present you before his glorious presence without fault and with great joy!” That joy will be absolutely sincere, unfeigned, and heartfelt; and the one who is made to stand and stay will be left stammering in unfeigned joy: “Gosh! I can’t believe it Lord! It’s beyond words! How good! How good the God of grace!”
